Are there any clicks to make user to get where they want faster?

Do you wish more people would fill out your web forms? Use your web or phone app? Buy from you online?

Heres one tip that will help:

Let them do what they want with as few clicks as possible!

It amazes me how some lessons have to be learned over and over again: weve known since the Internets early days that the more clicks required, the less user-friendly the result and the lower the sales.

And yet, more and more apps are ADDING clicks instead of removing them!

Why??

Even Googles Screwed It Up in Gmail!

Their new gmail interface violates two core usability guidelines:

  • It hides key information.

  • It makes you click more times than are needed to accomplish simple tasks, like adding a cc or changing the subject line.

How do I add a CC? Or change the subject?

It used to be that the CC field showed automatically, as did the subject line. I dont see what value was added by taking these away. Dont know about you, but I often want to copy someone on an email and/or change the subject line. I use Gmail constantly, so I figured out how to do it pretty quickly, but for people who are less computer savvy this places a needless barrier in front of them.

I think you also used to be able to click directly on the paper clip to open attachment, but thats gone too. And it is not obvious that you have to scroll not just to the bottom of that message, but all the way to the bottom of the thread to find the attachments.

Last Chance For LastPass?

Ive been a happy user of LastPass for ages. It safely stores all my passwords, and fills them in for me on web pages with a simple click (or even without clicking if Ive told it to Autofill). But in its latest version, theyve added needless clicks.

It used to be that when I visited a websites login page, LastPass would automatically show me the various profiles I had set up for that site and let me click to choose the one I wanted it to use. Now I have to click Show Matching Sites. Why? Isnt it obvious that Ill need that information? Even if there is only one matching site, it still makes me click to see it before it will fill it in.

More needless clicks

This is so annoying Im actually contemplating switching to a different password storage system. (That, plus the fact that it has never worked very well for me on the iPhone.)
