Jet vs Amazon for Sellers - A Comparison Review

What is Jet.com?

Jet.com was founded in 2014 by Marc Lore with claims that it would dethrone Amazon as the online marketplace king. Jet originally modelled themselves after Costco offering lower priced products with a yearly membership fee but they have since done away with their fees altogether. The following is a a comparison review of Jet vs Amazon along with with some software options if you decide that selling on Jet.com is right for you.

Some Key Differences Between Jet and Amazon that Sellers Should Consider

Pricing Strategy:

With Jet, the seller that offers the lowest price wins the order. On Amazon a unique multi-factor algorithm calculates which seller is awarded the order, also known as Buy Box.

Sellers are awarded the buy box depending on factors like Seller rating, relationship with Amazon, and price. This system is meant to distribute sales between Sellers to ensure everyone gets a piece of the pie. However, some Sellers complain that this is not the case.

Jets model favors price above everything. You can only win on Jet if you own the brand and are the exclusive seller, or have the best pricing, for example if you are a reseller.

Payouts:

Jet: Weekly Payment
Amazon: Bi-weekly Payment

SALES TAX:

Jet.com manages state sales tax for Jet Partners while with Amazon, sellers are responsible to handle their own sales tax in every State that their inventory is warehoused.

Jet has set up their system so that they are technically the seller of record. What that means is Jet will collect sales tax and remit collected taxes to taxing authorities. This relieves a huge burden on Sellers who currently utilize the FBA network. FBA sellers usually have inventory in multiple states.
