And, over the years, Ive been asked the same question countless times: There are too many opportunities out therehow do I choose just one? And really, who hasnt been so inundated with information and ideas that theyve just frozen and done nothing, like a deer in headlights, rather than moving forward on even one of them?

Its something Ive talked about it in my book E-Myth Mastery: The Seven Essential Disciplines for Building a World-Class Business, and I call this syndrome the Reluctant Entrepreneur. I call it that because I realized that these Reluctant Entrepreneurs are actually asking the wrong question.

Being overwhelmed with potential opportunities is not whats actually stopping these people from action. Not at all. So what is it? It had come to me like a slap in the face, especially after my years of working with small business owners: being overwhelmed by opportunities is just distracting them from the terror of actually dealing with the opportunity already sitting on your doorstep. So now we get to the right question: why have they lost their vision of growth? And the key to the answer lies in the question itself: loss. Now that theyve created a successful business, why would they risk losing it by sailing into uncharted waters?

What they dont realize is that their business, because theyve built it so well, is poised to grow. Yet the fear of loss has extinguished their ability to see thattheir vision of growth terminated at their own hand.
