THE PROBLEM
Scott came to us with the following problem. He has a high bounce rate on his website, his sales are sporadic because one week he can do very well while the next two weeks he does very poorly. He tried advertising on Google Adwords with no luck, he has been doing organic SEO for over a year, he doesnt have a budget for advertising, and he cant break through 10 sales per month.

Our first thought was the quality of the traffic was the problem, and while that was true, we refused to settle for that answer. We know what its like to compete in a cut throat marketplace, and we know that there is always a way to make it work.

Scott is in a very broad and competitive marketplace. He didnt target a specific niche, so his visitors are always looking for something different. We found that 50% of his visitors who had a high chance of becoming a customer would leave the search results without ever visiting a product page. This usually happens when a visitor doesnt find anything they want to buy from the website. The only way for Scott to compete in this industry as a drop shipper is to implement a volume business model which requires a minimum of 500,000 products on his website. Scott only had 10,000 products online, and he has been entering all of them in small chunks. We suggested Scott to put Easy Data Feed to work, and get a million products on his website by next month.
Then I found a trend that I never considered before. Most of the visitors would leave the product page after spending quite a bit of time on it. By analyzing the mouse movement behavior using Shopping Cart Elite threat and engagement analytics, I concluded that Scotts customers were not very savvy about the products they were considering to purchase. After reviewing the products he was selling I found them to be complex indeed. In order for a visitor to buy a complex product they would need to see a great product description that Scott was missing on every product page, or at least have an easy way to speak to a knowledgeable tech support representative. Scott couldnt afford to make a custom sales copy for 500,000 products, but he could afford to take a proactive role with live tech support. Based on the Threat and Engagement Analytics we found that Scott had an opportunity to sell to 100 customers. At 30% conversion rate which is normal for highly engaged visitors, Scott shouldve processed 30 orders. To accomplish this conversion increase, we advised Scott to implement a proactive live chat on his website.
Regardless of how much marketing Scott will do for his website he needs to fix his sales funnel first. If he doesnt fix his sales funnel than the website will most likely fail the way it is set up. When a sales funnel is broken then there is no marketing budget that can fix it.
Scott wasnt about to give up, so we recommended that he puts 100% of his focus towards implementing a live chat feature and utilize the proactive live chat engagement that is available in most live chat providers (we recommend Clickdesk). The goal is not to make a sale, but to get every possible visitor to initiate a live chat which in result will produce the sales goal. The whole website is supposed to be this one big LIVE CHAT customer support center. There should be no other promotions except for live chat and showing off the customer support.
The search results should get a proactive message asking the visitors what they are looking to buy, and the product page should get a proactive message asking the visitors if they need help. Scott must laser focus his attention on improving his live chat engagement on his website, and he will be able to close 25 sales on his website every month without paying a penny for advertising. When we say laser focus that means you do not stop optimizing it until you reach that sales goal. Once Scott reaches the sales goal, and the revenue will justify the operations of his business, only then would we recommend paying for advertising.
